"Soylent Green"

Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors, Joseph Cotten, Brock Peters, Paula Kelly, Edward G Robinson

Soylent Green is landmark science-fiction, riveting entertainment and a cautionary tale that holds a mirror to a tomorrow rife with ecological disaster. Working well in the futuristic genre (Planet of the Apes an The Omega Man), Charlton Heston portrays Thorn, a detective prowling the dank streets of a polluted, overpopulated Big Apple gone rotten in 2022. He's trailing a murderer- and the trail leads to a stunning discovery. Vividly realized, Soylent Green's world gains its power not just from its special effects but from its heart- a human dimension magnified by the performance of legendary Edward G Robinson in his moving screen farewell.

Refreshments will be available. Donations requested to cover costs of renting the community center and to support the MSSP. Discussion will follow. Note that this movie came out in 1973 and exemplifies some of present-day concerns about global warming and other looming ecological disasters. What really has been done in the last 33 years to avert a scenario such as presented in Soylent Green?
